The Secret Behind a Great Interview

Our expert lighting design creates interview footage your audience actually wants to watch.

From Good to Great

We're always reading faces. Eye movement, a head tilt, a scrunch of the chin-all tell us something about the person speaking. When watching a podcast, a customer testimonial, or a two-person Q&A, being able to clearly see the person on camera is the difference between pausing to listen and skipping to the next video.

And that's why interview lighting is so important.

Expressions carry part of the conversation. If the audience can't clearly read someone, they miss information unrelated to the words being spoken. Interview lighting preserves the full picture that body language gives, all the microexpressions we automatically interpret. It allows people to stay engaged with the person rather than working around distracting shadows or uneven lighting.

Multiple interviews, multiple settings, captured beautifully every time.

As you can see from the interview highlight we created, we've filmed people in a wide variety of settings. You probably didn't notice much beyond the constant background changes and constant rotation of people in the chair. And that's perfect. Because lighting you don't notice on screen is lighting done well.

We have our "tricks" that years of experience have given our crew — an instinct for reading a space quickly —but every interview still gets built from the ground up. Once the subject sits down, we're making small adjustments, ones that viewers never consciously notice.

Our expert lighting designers do all the work, so you don't have to stare past shadows or harsh glare. If it looks easy, it isn't. We design every setup for that particular environment, adjusting it once the person is on film to ensure the picture is natural and seamless.

Every Space Has Its Own Challenge

Outdoor interviews are often the most deceptive because sunlight is never even and almost always harsh. A location can look beautiful in person, yet create deep shadows under someone's eyes or emphasize every line in their face on camera. A single cloud passing across the sun affects continuity.

Warm, balanced lighting can be felt through the screen.

We design these productions with balance in mind.

Sun position also changes throughout the shoot, so lighting is never something we set once and forget. As the light shifts, we're adjusting right alongside it to keep the interview looking consistent.

Indoor spaces present a different set of problems. Restaurants tend to be darker than they appear. Convention centers often place speakers in front of enormous LED screens that serve as a backlight, so all you see is their silhouette. Offices can produce harsh overhead lighting that flatters no one. Every location asks different questions of the crew, which is why interview lighting never comes from a standard setup.

Indoor interviews have their own obstacles.

It's a delicate dance that our team has mastered. Every environment presents different obstacles, but after years of filming commercial productions and interviews in every setting you can imagine, we love showing what we can do.

Lighting Reflects on Your Brand

Every interview becomes part of how people perceive your business. A customer testimonial, executive message, recruitment video, or podcast appearance may last only a few minutes, but viewers form assumptions about professionalism almost immediately.

Consistent, thoughtful lighting gives those conversations the production value they deserve without drawing attention to itself. People remember what was said because nothing distracted them from listening.
